Beautiful Pacific Island Joins in Changning’s “Circle of Friends”

As one of the most international districts in Shanghai, Changning boasts 27 consular offices in Shanghai, more than 200 diplomats' official residences, as well as over 7,200 foreign-funded enterprises and offices and multinational procurement agencies, accounting for about a quarter of the total enterprises in the district. At present, with a total of 46 regional headquarters of multinational companies, Changning District has forged the friendly exchange relationship and carried out active exchanges and interactions with the cities and districts in 12 countries in Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania.

 

It is learned that on the afternoon of September 11, the Changning District Government and the French Polynesian Papeete Municipal Government signed the "Agreement of Changning District, Shanghai City, People's Republic of Chinaand Papeete City, French Polynesia on Forging Friendly District-City Relationship”. So far, Changning has established friendly exchange relationships with the cities in 12 countries and regions.

 

According to the agreement, the two sides will, in the principle of equality and mutual benefit, carry out various exchanges and cooperation in economy, trade, science and technology, culture, education, sports, health, personnel, tourism, social governance and other fields, so as to promote common prosperity and development. The officials and relevant departments of both sides will maintain regular contacts to discuss the exchanges and cooperation as well as the issues of common concern. The agreement will be valid for five years.

 

Located in Oceania, Papeete is the capital of French overseas territory Polynesia in the southeast of the Pacific. It has been over 120 years since Papeete City was founded in 1890, and the city is the political, economic and cultural center of the French Polynesian region. According to the sources, with a population of about 40,000, Papeete City is surrounded by another 7 cities or towns, and they jointly form the Greater Papeete region with a total population of about 200,000, where the functional departments of the French Polynesian local autonomous government are located. The tourism, pearl farming and fishery industry are the main sources of the city’s revenues, and the trade and finance are also well developed.

According to an official of Changning District Foreign Affairs Office, in 2011, Changning District and Papeete City established the initial contacts. In August 2014 the two sides formally signed the "Memorandum of Changning District, Shanghai City, People's Republic of Chinaand Papeete City, French Polynesia on Forging the Friendly Exchange Relationship". In recent years, the two places have carried out extensive exchanges in arts and culture, economy and trade, tourism, youth exchanges, social governance and other areas, and achieved encouraging results.

 

Since 2015, the two sides have officially implemented the "China-French Polynesia Middle School Students Education Project”, with the partnership set up between High School Affiliated to East China University of Political Science and Law, Xianxia High School and Loushan High School in Shanghai and Le Lycée-collège La Mennais, Lycée Paul-Gauguin, Le Collège Tipaerui, and Le Collège Anne-Marie Javouhey in Papeete, and the students in the two regions have exchanged visits regularly. The youth exchanges have served as a bond to pave the friendship road across the Pacific.

 

A Changning District official said at the signing ceremony that the signing of the agreement and the establishment of the relationship of friendship district and city will not only advance the two sides’ cooperation in economy, culture, education and other fields, but also improve the international level of Changning.

 

According to the sources, from September 9 to 16, the Papeete municipal government delegation visited the landmark areas and facilities in Changning such as Hongqiao Linkong Economic Park, Raffles City Changning, L’Avenue, Shanghai No. 3 Girls’ High School, Tianshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shanghai International Dance Center, Changning District Library and the folk culture center, so as to learn about the development in economy, commerce, education, health, culture and other areas in Changning and seek opportunities for cooperation in the future.
