Changning, Papeete Forge Relationship of Friendship

After years of contacts and exchanges, approved by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), Changning District and Papeete City, French Polynesia, have upgraded the friendly relation to the relationship of friendship district and city. The signing ceremony for the relationship was held at the district government building, and attending the ceremony were Gu Honghui, deputy district Party chief and district governor, Weng Huajian, deputy district governor, Michel Buillard, mayor of Papeete City, Axel Cruau, Consul General of France in Shanghai, Papeete City’s vice mayors including Hinatea Tama-Georges, and other officials.


Signing the agreement on the relationship of friendship district and city, the two sides will, in the principle of equality and mutual benefit, carry out various exchanges and cooperation in economy, trade, science and technology, culture, education, sports, health, personnel, tourism, social governance and other fields, so as to promote common prosperity and development; the officials and relevant departments of both sides will maintain regular contacts to discuss the exchanges and cooperation as well as the issues of common concern. When in Changning, the delegation of Papeete City, French Polynesia, visited the Gubei Citizens Center, Tianshan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the district library, the folk culture center, Xianxia High School, Raffles Plaza and other places.


It has been over 120 years since Papeete City was founded in 1890. As the capital of the French Overseas Territory Polynesia, the city is the political, economic and cultural center of the region. The interaction between Changning and Papeete began in 2011. In 2014, Changning District and the French Polynesia Papeete City officially signed a memorandum of the friendly exchange relationship, so as to promote the friendly exchange programs. In 2015, the two sides officially launched the "China-French Polynesia Middle School Students Education Project", and since then the students at High School Affiliated to East China University of Political Science and Law, Xianxia High School and Loushan High School have exchanged visits with the middle school students in Papeete. With the friendly exchanges between the two sides continuously increasing, in May 2017, the relationship was upgraded from “friendly exchange relationship” to “friendly district-city relationship”.
