The festival this year attracted choirs from 22 countries, including Hungary, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, China, Japan, South Korea, Argentina and South Africa.

The DHU choir was one of two Chinese groups that entered the competition. They sang three songs by Jake Runestad, Zoltán Kodály and Chinese composer Liu Xiaogeng.

Although most of the 41 singers are amateurs, they drew much applause as they were adjudged winners at a major international music festival.

It was not the first time that Donghua University Singers stood atop the podium. They won two gold awards at the International Youth Choir Festival 2015 in Hong Kong and one gold at the fifth unaccompanied chorus competition in Shanghai in 2016.

The choir also plays an active role on stages home and abroad, such as the fifth National University Students Art Show, the 31st Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, the CCTV-15 Spring Festival chorus gala, Shanghai New Year Chorus Concert and the University Students New Year’s Concert of Shanghai.

They also presented a concert featuring gold medal songs at the He Luting Concert Hall with two other universities in 2016.
