The District has stayed on the rise in its population size. Its first
township of Fahua, created in 1910, had only 18,452 residents. After liberation
in 1949, it expanded westward to annex much of the rural land and people. By the
end of 2004, its number of residents has shot up to 621,700, or a population
density of 16,716 people per square kilometer, accounting for 4.6% of the total
residents in Shanghai. Since 1992, population in the District has shown a cycle
of low-birth, low-death and low-rise, with the growth rate shrank to -0.38‰. And
the aging of its population dates back to 1982.
