My name is Lan Hai and come from Israel. More than ten years ago, I came
to Shanghai which deeply impressed on me. In my viewpoint, it is the best one
among modern city in the world. Liu Wei, My wife , and I settled in here six
years ago due to my business. The enormous changes amazed me greatly when I
visited this city again. No cities can compare with Shanghai in terms of fast
development. The city is changing and taking on a new look not annually, monthly
but daily.
Now my family live in Saint John residential community. We have
lived in other communities before, but I prefer here, not only because of its
pleasant environment and modern facilities, but also because of its
inexpressible atmosphere of humanism and culture. Just take our Zhou Jiaqiao
Sub-district for example, the clubhouse culture promoted here is a kind of
quality life style and concept combining spirit and material, which makes
strangers like us could easily enjoy the mysterious oriental culture and feel at
home. Moreover, there are several fine arts performances in our community each
year. I was surprised and delighted to see that besides Chinese-flavored folk
musical instruments, European musical instruments like cello and piano were also
played in these shows. Though given for free, these performances are quite
remarkable.
Now, I have some Chinese friends who cherish friendship very
much. And they are always ready to help you as much as possible. The people,
including those I am unfamiliar with are all warm and hospitable to me. When I
just moved into Saint John community, I was very busy with my work and had no
time to take care of my family. So my wife quitted her job and became a full
time housewife, doing some housework and looking after our children at home. I
worried a lot that she could not tolerate such a boring life as a housewife. To
my surprise, the residential committee here eliminated my anxiety. After they
knew the situation of our family, they invited my wife to attend various
community activities. At the beginning, my wife still had some misgivings,
because most of them were not young. She was afraid that they had nothing in
common. However, finally, my wife was moved by their enthusiasm. Since then, she
began to enjoy herself in activities held in the community, the activities such
as making dumpling, cooking contest and learning calligraphy make her enjoyed
and entertained; now she even requires me and our children to attend community
activities. I have regarded here as my second hometown. I still remember I
attended a commonweal activity and my family was interviewed by a TV program -
Heart Garden to share our happiness and joy with the audience. I showed it off
to my family in Israel, whoopee! I am famous in China!
I like Changning
district because it provides me a lot of services. The clubhouse culture in Zhou
Jia Qiao attracts me, the people in Saint John community moved me, and I also
like the fashionable young people performing rolling skating in Milan Square and
the old grandfathers accompanying their grandsons flying kites in Zhong Shan
Park. Although in a foreign country, I am not lonely at all. Everything here is
dynamic and I like people here, for they are warm, enthusiastic, kind and
optimistic. I feel happy and joyful.
