The themed activity“Changning, Home for Us All: Foreign Expo Volunteers in
Action”was held in Changning today, at which around 30 foreign Expo volunteers
were awarded honorary trophies.
As one of the most globalized districts in Shanghai, Changning has always
been showing concerns about the work, study and livelihood of its foreign
residents in an effort to ensure that they are comfortable staying in Shanghai.
To help promote volunteer services by foreign residents for the approaching
Expo, Changning has formed foreign volunteer teams since 2009, with a total of
over 5,000 people participating in the volunteer services.
Apart from services such as correction of misspelt and misleading English
expressions and traffic order maintenance, foreign volunteers offer lectures at
English classes for local residents during their spare time. 26 foreign
volunteers and 4 volunteer teams were commended by the District Government for
their outstanding performances. Kosen, a young man from Bahamas, said in fluent
Chinese that“I’ll never miss any opportunity to offer my volunteer service for
the Expo, which is expected to be held in my second hometown Shanghai”.
Wu Wei, Director-general of the 3rd Bureau of the State Council Information
Office, Bian Baiping, Secretary of the CPC Changning District Committee, Wang
Jianjun, Deputy Director of the Information Office of Shanghai Municipal
Government and Zhu Guohong, Chief of the Publicity Department of Changning
District jointly launched the“Shanghai Hongqiao Volunteer”website. With the
functions of volunteer information, project and training management and
statistic analysis, the website will offer convenient services to foreign
volunteers.
